Those of us in the language industry know the limitations of Google Translate. We know that it frequently misses the mark, especially with nuanced or complicated texts. Even Google knows that their service cannot replace human translators. This article discusses the US government’s use of Google Translate to review refugee social media posts, in an effort to determine whether they are “safe” to be admitted to the US. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services defends it's move but this article takes an interesting look at some test tweets run through online translators. Have a look.
