What’s the safest place in the world?
You might have thought of a place you love and always associate with security and comfort. Or, in keeping with the times, maybe you thought of a desert island where no human beings are around to spread disease.
If you guessed the latter, you’re not totally far off. Although it’s far from tropical and definitely not deserted (in addition to lots of animals, nearly 5,000 scientists are currently living there), Antarctica is one of the few inhabited places on earth that hasn’t had a single COVID-19 case, and, since it will soon be winter and the continent will be inaccessible, has no risk of seeing any cases.
Still, the situation isn’t a total paradise. While the researchers living there consider themselves lucky, many are also struggling with not being able to see their loved ones or help their native communities directly.
