The solution to a problem often comes with consequences. Here’s a new one: Using hand sanitizer is an important preventative measure during our current pandemic. But certain brands may be toxic.
The problem lies in two similar-sounding ingredients, ethanol, and methanol.
Both kill germs, but methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin. Symptoms of methanol poisoning include nausea and blurred vision.
Unfortunately, it’s not easy to tell if a hand sanitizer gel contains methanol, since it’s often mislabeled as ethanol.
The FDA has recalled close nearly 75 brands of hand sanitizer for this reason. Read on for more information, and to find out if the one you use is on the list.
