Despite Arabic being the fourth most common language among internet users, only 0.6% of internet content is available in Arabic. In an effort to fix this under representation, the organization Ideas Beyond Borders (IBB), is working to dispel myths, confront lies and foster critical thinking by using teams of translators to create more websites in Arabic across Iraq. But it more than just translation, it is bringing hope to so many people in an area known is war and destruction.
IBB is focusing their translations on topics such as science, literature, philosophy and female scientists. IBB’s founder, Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, says he wants to “arm Iraqi and Arab young people against the authoritarian regimes and extremist groups that silence diverse narratives and allow violence to thrive.” This translation project has now morphed into a youth movement where each day is filled with more hope and promise than ever before because they are working on a solution to make their country a better place.
The kids are alright.
