Germany rejects the ISO 20771 standard for legal translation

In BIG DEAL translation and diplomatic news, Germany has rejected the ISO 20771 standard for legal translation that was set to become a norm throughout the EU. The standard was judged incompatible with German law.

While this decision will cause chaos and confusion among EU member countries, the alternative may not have been much better, at least for those directly involved in legal translation. Communications expert Marion Marking reports that it would have conflicted with many aspects of another set of legal translation regulations, ISO 17100.
