October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and sometimes there are things we need to be aware of that may not have reached the mainstream public.
Earlier this year, journalist Kate Pickert published her book Radical: The Science, Culture, and History of Breast Cancer in America. It’s an exploration of everything from the history of treating breast cancer, to new methods of detection and treatment today. Pickert was inspired to write the book after her own brush with the disease.
In an interview with Science Friday podcast host Ira Flatow, Pickert discusses some surprising issues and recent findings, including the fact that mammograms may not be as effective as they’re reputed to be -and that this has been known by doctors for decades.
