Like their colleagues on other continents, doctors and researchers in Africa are studying and solving problems that affect patients around the world. Unlike many of their international colleagues, African medical researchers’ work is horrendously underfunded.
The article gives an excellent example of the impact of lack of funding: Professor Tsige Gebre-Mariam, who’s developed an anti-parasitic drug, as well as groundbreaking treatments for eczema and hemorrhoids. Additionally, he developed a plant-based treatment for malaria, a condition that kills nearly 500,000 people a year. Due to lack of funds, none of Gebre-Mariam’s discoveries have been developed and made available to patients in need.
