With schools closing (often for the entire remaining schoolyear) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us parents have also become assistant teachers, trying our best to help our kid(s) complete and understand their assignments.
But we all know that we aren’t trained teachers, and that our kids may not end up learning what they were supposed to this year. If that makes you feel panicky, a recent Lifehacker article has some very soothing news-- not to mention good advice.
Since many of the assignments your kid(s) get are just to keep them occupied or basically reviewing concepts they’ve got down, it can be tough to figure out what’s really important.
Parenting writer Meghan Moravcik Walbert suggests asking their teacher(s) what basic skills they should have acquired by the end of the school year.
Then, during the summer, you can practice and reinforce these skills with fun activities. For instance, if your child is supposed to know how to write short informative paragraphs, you can ask them to keep a summer journal or write to a friend.
