When you visit your doctor, do they seem to spend more time staring at a computer screen than they do at you? Do some of them even complain that they are spending more time with their computer's drop-down menus and macros than in diagnosing your problem? Well, we have all either experienced this or know someone who has. And within all of this lies the limitations of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and healthcare. AI is now being used in healthcare to extract and use data from electronic health records, but is it able to capture the actual story of the patient? What about listening to a patients voice to get the whole picture? Where are the drop-down menus for a patients complaints, worries and experiences? Until these are also "entered," doctors will only have one part of the story. In this article, the author argues "if we are going to build machines that use data to help diagnose and treat humans, then humans, not technology, should be at the center of the process." We tend to agree.
