The Washington Post recently announced the launch of a Spanish-language podcast, El Washington Post. Episodes will be released two times a week, and will offer in-depth coverage of three to four news stories in about 20 minutes.

For a traditionally English-language publication like The Washington Post to branch into Spanish isn’t so surprising. Hispanics are the largest minority in the United States, and 13.4% of the US population speaks Spanish at home. Although a majority of Spanish-speakers in the US also speak English at a level they evaluate as “well” or “very well”, millions of others do not.

Even bilingual English-Spanish people may prefer to hear complex information in Spanish. Studies show that from the time we’re children, we learn better in our native language.

The podcast isn't just good news for Spanish speakers. Not only will El Washington Post make analyzing headlines easier for many native Spanish speakers; it’s also a great, free way for Spanish learners to train their ears!
