With masks becoming required accessories in closed and open spaces around the world, innovations are inevitable. In the past weeks and months, we’ve seen everything from masks as fashion statements, to devices for translation. Now, electronics giant LG has created a face mask that doubles as an air purifier.
LG’s Puricare Wearable Air Purifier isn’t on the market yet, and a lot of specifics seem hard to find out. For instance, what exactly is the mask made of, and just how much does it weigh?
But one thing is for sure: it looks like a typical filtered face mask taken to the next level.
The device uses disposable filters as well as built-in fans to purify the air the wearer is breathing, and to help them breathe better in general. The only catch is, as at least one reporter has pointed out, the outgoing air may not be filtered, which means the mask actually wouldn’t be protective gear.
Another potential issue is how easy it is to wear. In a promotional photo, the mask appears a bit clunky, possibly made of hard material, and seems to jut off the wearer’s face like a muzzle. The mask is supposed to be lightweight, according to LG’s press release, but it’s hard to imagine that it would be lighter or as light as a typical medical or cloth mask. And would its design interfere with getting around, reading, or even just glancing down at the sidewalk or your phone?
