Patients who have to get an MRI exam already face some challenges, including stress about their health and about the procedure itself. But a new study shows that there’s another thing some may need to be concerned about.
In US hospitals, images from patients who need a translator are “significantly worse” than those who speak English. Although MRI scans are not uncommon, radiologist Dr. Miles Taffel reports that translation for specific instructions in this area is underdeveloped.
Fortunately, the study offers some suggestions for solving this problem. These include training interpreters on specific vocabulary involved with MRI breathing instructions, and having an onsite interpreter.
